Permanent Makeup Basics

Understanding the basics of permanent makeup helps clients make informed decisions, ensuring they achieve the best results & feel confident throughout the process.

Permanent makeup, also known as micro-pigmentation or permanent cosmetics, involves the application of pigment into the skin to enhance facial features like eyebrows. The process is typically done with specialized equipment that uses fine needles to implant the pigment into the skin’s dermal layer. It offers a long-lasting solution for those who want to save time on daily makeup application or for those with thinning and/or sparse eyebrows.

Tattoos use ink, while permanent makeup uses pigment. Tattoos also go deeper into the skin than permanent makeup does. It’s important to remember that implanting pigment into the skin (no matter the layer) is a permanent procedure & should be treated as such.

It typically causes minimal discomfort, but pain levels do vary depending on individual sensitivity. A topical numbing cream is applied to the eyebrow area to help minimize any discomfort. Most clients describe the sensation as a light scratching or tingling feeling, but it is generally tolerable. While some might feel a bit of pressure or mild irritation, the numbing cream ensures the process is as comfortable as possible. After the procedure, some mild redness & swelling may occur, but it typically subsides within a few hours.

There are many factors that impact pigment retention. Oily skin can cause permanent makeup pigment to fade more quickly as excess oil may break down the pigment, leading to less retention and a lighter result over time. Thick, uneven, or damaged skin can affect permanent makeup pigment retention by causing uneven absorption, leading to patchy results and faster fading. Lifestyle, medication, age, smoking, metabolism, & facial surgery can contribute to fading. Proper aftercare is essential for pigment retention, as following post-procedure instructions helps prevent fading, infection, and uneven healing, ensuring long-lasting, vibrant results.

– The tool used for microblading is a small, handheld device with a fine, multi-needle blade at the tip. This blade is used to make tiny, hair-like incisions in the skin, which are then filled with pigment to mimic the appearance of natural eyebrow hairs. The tool allows for precise, controlled strokes, ensuring a realistic & detailed brow design. Microblading tools come in various shapes & sizes, with the most common being a straight or curved blade, depending on the desired effect & the artist’s technique.
– The tool used for shading in permanent makeup is typically a permanent makeup machine (similar to a tattoo gun) with a fine needle that deposits pigment into the skin in a stippling or shading motion. The machine operates with a motor that moves the needle in rapid, controlled movements, allowing for precise pigment placement in various shading techniques like ombre or powder brows.

Yes but please keep in mind, oily skin can cause pigment to fade more quickly due to excess oil breaking it down. Oily skin can have larger pores & uneven skin texture, making it harder for permanent makeup to settle evenly & last longer. This can lead to lighter, less defined results & may require more frequent touch-ups.

Your first session will last anywhere from 3-4 hours & touchups can last anywhere from 2-3 hours. Please plan accordingly, beautiful brows can’t be rushed.

We recommend that you come to your appointment makeup free & that you don’t apply makeup to the treated area for at least 2 weeks following your session as maintaining clean skin is essential for proper healing & preventing infection.

Since microblading involves creating small cuts in the skin, individuals with keloids may experience abnormal healing, leading to raised, thick scars. It’s best to consult with a professional who can assess your skin condition & provide guidance on safe alternatives.

While the timeframe for touchups varies from person to person, an annual touchup is most common, too frequent touchups can compromise the integrity of the skin.

Please do not dye, wax or tweeze your brows for at least 1 week before your procedure. You must not be pregnant, breastfeeding, or currently on chemo treatment, and you must be at least 10 days out from any Botox or filler treatments.
